The Project

Our primary topic for this project was to find out how the purpose and programming of the Concord Neighborhood Center has changed over time. As the oldest community center in Indiana, we wanted to learn more about the impact it has had on multiple generations of Southside residents. Through interviews with Concord Center staff, current and former residents of the Southside, and prominent members of the Southside community, we were able to construct a collective testimony to the Concord Center’s legacy. The People

Throughout the course of our 2020 Spring semester, we dedicated time to interviewing members of Indianapolis’ Southside community surrounding the Concord Center. We interviewed both community members and members of the Concord Center staff. We were able to gain a plethora of knowledge through these discussions, which helped guide our research. The Team

Our team consists of six IUPUI students, all sharing a love for ethnography. We all joined this research project for a variety of reasons, but all have one thing in common: a drive to learn. As anthropologists, we have a passion for learning about people, places, and the history surrounding them. This project has been a fun-filled learning experience and provided us with a plethora of opportunities to learn about this incredible community so close to our IUPUI campus. The History

As anthropologists, we are invested in understanding the historical and materialist underpinnings of the Concord Center. Through our fieldwork, it became evident that the Concord Center has emerged as an anchor and a reliable force in the Southside community despite the changing social landscape. We traced the history of the Concord Center and mapped it onto a timeline to indicate how the Concord Center has transformed in the backdrop of a changing socio-political landscape characterized by displacement, movement, and migration.
